Application of Diatomite
2021-05-17
Diatomite is a kind of siliceous rock, a kind of biogenic siliceous sedimentary rock, which is mainly composed of the remains of ancient diatoms. The chemical composition of diatomaceous earth is mainly SiO2, containing a small amount of Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, MgO, etc. and organic matter.
The density of diatomite is 1.9-2.3g/cm3, the bulk density is 0.34-0.65g/cm3, the specific surface area is 40-65㎡/g, the pore volume is 0.45-0.98cm³/g, and the water absorption rate is 2-4 times of its own volume. With a melting point of 1650°C-1750°C, a special porous structure can be observed under an electron microscope.
The main uses of diatomite are fillers, filter aids, catalytic carriers, adsorbents, environmentally friendly building materials and so on.
1. Fillers
Mainly used in coatings, plastics, rubber, medicine, papermaking, abrasives, precision castings and microporous ceramics.
2. Filter Aid
The main application areas are beer industry, pharmaceutical industry, water purification filtration, oil industry, mailing solutions, coatings and dyes, fertilizers, acids, alkalis, seasonings, sugars, alcohol and other filtration.
3. Catalytic Carrier
Diatomaceous earth has suitable specific surface area, high porosity, abrasion resistance, acid resistance, heat resistance and other characteristics, and becomes an ideal carrier for catalysts for hydrogenation, oxidation, hydration, dehydrogenation, reduction and other reactions.
4. Sorbent
The adsorption of diatomite is mainly physical adsorption, which has a fast adsorption rate and strong adsorption capacity. It is mainly used for urban sewage, papermaking wastewater, printing and dyeing wastewater, slaughter wastewater, oily wastewater and heavy metal wastewater.
5. Environmentally Friendly Building Materials
Due to its special structure, diatomite is an excellent choice for diatom mud ecological wall materials.
